Listen to Obituary

Christopher Michael Hays, 48, was a man of quiet strength, calm presence, and unmistakable honesty.

Chris was known for his big heart and his willingness to help anyone in need. He was caring, kind, and deeply compassionate, always quick to offer support and lend a hand. Those who knew him best also knew his onery streak-he could be blunt, stubborn, and honest to the core-but that was part of his charm and what made him so genuine. He could always make you laugh, even in quiet, subtle ways, and his humor will be dearly missed.

Chris was the first grandchild of the family and quickly became the sunshine to them all. From a young age, he lived life with energy and passion. He grew up playing baseball and hockey, roller skating, and sharing his love of music as a trumpet player in the band. After graduating from Checotah High School, Chris made his home in Muskogee, where he worked as a machinist in manufacturing and built a life surrounded by family and friends.

As an adult, he found joy in riding motorcycles, watching movies, and tending to his garden-especially growing tomatoes, which he took great pride in. Chris took pride in keeping himself sharp and cleaned up, a reflection of the respect he had for himself and others. He loved deeply, cared fiercely, and lived authentically. He loved his kids and family so much and was loved by so many. His presence filled every room in a calm but memorable way, and he will be missed more than he will ever know.

Chris is survived by his sister, Shena Dan and her husband Reggie Dan; his brother, Lee Hays; his daughter, Kylie Cooper; his sons, Gavin and Darrin Hays; his ex-wife, Tara Brinlee; his aunt, Melinda Conn; his uncle, Joe Hays; and his cousins, Meloney Brown, Stacy Palermo, Garrett Jackman, and Jodi Hays.

He is preceded in death by his mother, Renee Montgomery; his father, Melvin Hays Jr.; his grandparents, Mema Bettie Hays, Papa Melvin Hays Sr., Grandmother Hannah Montgomery, and Grandfather Dewayne Montgomery.

He will be remembered not only for his humor and honesty, but for his unwavering generosity, the quiet sunshine he brought to his family, and the way he made people feel seen and cared for.
