Listen to Obituary

Lance William Mathes, 74, passed away on January 5, 2026.

Lance was born on November 2, 1951, in Oakland, California, to Phil and Constance Mathes. From the beginning, Lance stood out for his charming personality, meticulous nature, and ability to connect easily with others. He had a presence that made people feel comfortable and a warmth that stayed with them long after conversations ended.

Lance married the love of his life, Roberta Crockroft Mathes, and together they shared 25 years of marriage and 43 years of friendship, love, and partnership. They were goofy in their own special way and shared a bond that was unmistakably deep and genuine. Their love story was anything but ordinary, perfectly reflected in their unforgettable Klingon wedding, which was televised and celebrated by family and friends who joyfully joined in by dressing as Star Trek characters. It was an event filled with laughter, creativity, and love-one that remains a cherished memory for everyone involved.

Lance and Roberta truly did everything together. They shared the same dreams, passions, and sense of adventure, eventually moving off by themselves to Okmulgee, Oklahoma, where they built a life rooted in companionship and shared purpose. They were, in every sense, meant to be.

A lifelong Star Trek fan, Lance embraced his interests wholeheartedly. He also loved gambling and, during his retirement years, found great joy in playing video games. Whether immersed in his favorite shows, games, or hobbies, Lance approached life with enthusiasm and focus.

Lance is survived by his beloved wife, Roberta Mathes; his daughter, Cyrena Mathes; his son, Clayton Mathes; his father, Phil Mathes; and his brother, Greg Mathes.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Constance Mathes, and his sister, Vicky Mathes.

Lance will be remembered for his charm, his precision, his devotion to his family, and the joyful, unique way he lived life. His legacy lives on in the love he shared, the laughter he inspired, and the unforgettable memories he leaves behind.
