Listen to Obituary

Laura Suzanne Gornek (Hodges, deSousa) passed away on September 6th at the age of 54. It is with heavy hearts that we share Laura's death, which was the result of suicide. Her passing is a painful reminder of the invisible struggles many endure, and the importance of compassion, mental health support, and open conversations about these challenges.

Laura is survived by partner Steve Halvorsen and her children, Hunter Reid and Victoria Gornek.

She is preceded in death by mother Judith deSousa, father Gregory Hodges, and grandparents Beatrice "June" and John Heidebrecht.

Laura was a proud citizen of the Muscogee (Creek) Nation, a heritage she held close to her heart. Alongside her partner Steve, she found joy in composing and producing music, using it as a creative way to express herself. As an adolescent and young adult, Laura studied fashion design and made many custom pieces including her own prom dresses. As a mother, those skills were used to make Halloween costumes, themed family outfits, and to pass her knowledge to her children. She was an involved parent at her children's schools where she volunteered regularly-setting up classrooms, baking for class parties, tutoring students, and chaperoning field trips. She was a dedicated "band mom" assisting with marching band games, parades, and competitions.

At 39, Laura made the brave decision to change her career path, returning to school to earn her bachelor's degree in social work with an emphasis on mental health. She had recently embarked on a master's program in the same field, driven by a strong desire to help others. She will be remembered for her kind heart, her dedication to helping others, and the impact she had on her community.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to organizations supporting mental health awareness and suicide prevention.

Laura's story serves as a reminder to check in with those around us, listen, and seek help when needed. Support is available, and there is always hope.
