Susan was born in Oklahoma City, OK, to Alexander "Al" A. and Katherine "Kitty" M. Perakis. While growing up, Susan attended Oklahoma City schools and St. George Greek Orthodox Church Sunday School on the weekends. She graduated from Grant High School in 1979 and attended classes at Oklahoma State University. After her schooling, Susan worked as a paraprofessional for Watson McKenzie law firm in downtown OKC.
She married Freddie "Fred" A. Casteel in 1984, and they welcomed their son, Cole A. Casteel in 1993. Susan became a substitute teacher when Cole started school and quickly found her place in education. In 2001, they moved to Owasso, OK and welcomed their daughter, Kelli E. Gullick (Casteel) in 2002.
After being a dedicated substitute teacher for many years, Susan became a paraprofessional in the special education setting with Owasso Public Schools for years until her retirement in 2021. As a paraprofessional, Susan attended the Special Olympics of Oklahoma many times, protested at the state capitol for teacher raises, and impacted a plethora of students. She always had a passion for helping others. Susan resided in Owasso until her passing after a long, persistent fight with cancer in 2026.
Susan was a loyal daughter, heartfelt sister, dedicated wife, loving mother, dear friend, committed educator, and companion to all who knew her. Susan is predeceased by her parents and succeeded by her spouse, siblings Alex G. Perakis and Mary A. Haynes, children Cole and Kelli, daughter-in-law Sesily Casteel, and son-in-law Dallas Gullick.
Susan was a protector, fierce lover, strong fighter, and a faithful member of the Greek Orthodox Church. May her memory be eternal.
